The power of positive thinking

With the stress of trying to balance assessment, work, extra-curricular activities, a social life and keeping up with your favourite Netflix shows (Riverdale anyone?) it can be hard to stay in a positive frame of mind. It is super easy to feel overwhelmed with so much going on and you can start to feel less like your best-self. Let me tell you, being your best-self is not about the type of clothes you wear or how voluminous your hair is looking, it is about who you are on the inside and how you feel about yourself. As they say, if you’re beautiful on the inside, it will shine through to your outside. Here are some tips that can help you achieve that positive mindset.

1. Surround yourself with positive people
The people that you surround yourself with can influence whether you feel like your best self to such a huge extent! If you surround yourself with people who think you’re lousy, then you’re going to feel lousy. Having a close group of family and friends that shower you with love, care and support will make you feel like a million bucks! Having positive people in your life that are helping you to become your best-self is one of the greatest things that life has to offer.

2. Say yes! 
Stepping outside of your comfort zone and saying yes to new experiences is one super cool way of bettering yourself. One time before I went snorkelling, I was looking out at the water and I was absolutely terrified. As I was watching from the platoon, I noticed everyone in the water having a great time and then I realised that if I didn’t step out of my comfort zone, I was going to regret it in the long run. I let my positive thinking kick in and convinced myself that it was going to be an amazing experience (it was!) and jumped straight into the water. I could’ve missed that opportunity if I wasn’t thinking positively. If you refuse to let your fears take away opportunities in your life, you will become a stronger person. Go you!

3. Gratitude
One of my all-time favourite quotes is, “the difference between happy and unhappy people is their level of gratitude” because as soon as I read it, it changed my way of thinking. Sometimes if you have a bad day, it can lead you to think that you have a bad life and that nothing can ever go right for you. Instead of thinking like that, think about everything that you have that you are grateful for and you will feel better! For me, I am grateful for my family and friends, the city I live in, the amazing food I get to eat every day and my access to all the music in the world. Once you start realising everything that is good in your life, you will come closer to being the best you that you can be.

4. Good Mood Music
If anything can make me feel great and turn me into my best self, it is music. I love everything from Harry Styles to Elvis Presley to French Café Music. My favourite thing to do is turn my music up as loud as it can go and jump around until I am puffed out, lying on the floor. It has been scientifically proven that exercise makes you happier and jumping around like a maniac to your favourite song counts as exercise! What could be greater and make you feel more like your best self?

5. Turn negative into positive
My last piece of advice is that in in any negative situation there is always a positive. For example, you may think that walking home from the bus stop in the heat of the afternoon is the worst thing in the world but really, you’re getting exercise and you get to spend time outside! Or maybe you’re upset because your little sister keeps stealing clothes from your wardrobe? Instead of being mad that she keeps wearing all of your clothes, be flattered because she probably looks up to you and wants to be exactly like her cool older sister.
